From Blue Ball to Low Ball: Changing Rally Platforms

Blue Ball proved that a cheap Can-Am X3 could become an expensive race build. Low Ball became a simpler, lower-cost way to learn car control in the dirt.

Blue Ball taught me that I loved driving in the dirt. It also taught me that buying the cheap version of a race vehicle does not necessarily produce a cheap race vehicle.

I bought Blue Ball, a discounted 2021 Can-Am Maverick X3 X RS, because a short-course off-road open house at Eagles Canyon Raceway had shown me an entirely different kind of car control. The surface moved. Grip changed by the lap. The vehicle pitched, rolled and used far more suspension travel than anything I had driven on pavement.

I wanted more of that feeling: sliding, catching the slide, reading the surface and becoming comfortable with a vehicle moving underneath me.

What I did not need was another expensive competition program.

Blue Ball eventually made that distinction very clear.

The Cheap X3 That Wasn't Cheap

The original Racer Math seemed reasonable. Buy a deeply discounted, stock X3 and build only what I needed.

Nine days after buying it, I rolled it on the opening lap of my first drive.

I entered a corner too quickly and treated a long-travel side-by-side too much like a road-course car. Trail braking loaded the nose, the rear came up and momentum finished the job. The damage was manageable and I drove the rest of the day, but the lesson was immediate: experience in one discipline does not make you experienced in another.

After that first roll, safety and control upgrades were the right response. Blue Ball received a proper cage, seats, harnesses, a window net, fire extinguisher, wheels, tires, suspension work, steering changes, cooling improvements, data and brake upgrades. The first round of repairs and preparation added roughly $13,000.

The result was safer and much more capable. It also ended the theory that buying the cheap X3 would be the economical route.

The Second Roll Changed the Question

I trained with R&R Off-Road and learned more about jumping, rotation and working with long-travel suspension. Driving Blue Ball became one of the most exciting things I had done, and sharing that experience with my son made it even better.

Then, before my first race, the course was freshly watered. I carried confidence from drier conditions into a corner with completely different grip and sent it too hard.

Blue Ball barrel-rolled off the course and landed back on its wheels. This one was violent and genuinely frightening. The second repair added roughly another $8,000, including another cage, radiator work, brake changes and a wrap to cover the bruises.

I repaired it and drove it again, but the question had changed. It was no longer, “How do I make this X3 faster?” It was, “What am I actually trying to get from dirt driving?”

The answer was not trophies or a professional off-road program. I wanted affordable seat time, car-control practice, time wrenching with friends and family, and a platform I could use without every mistake carrying a massive repair bill.

Buying Built Versus Building Cheap

Blue Ball was a useful example of why buying a completed competition vehicle can be cheaper than building a bargain from scratch.

Starting with a cheap stock side-by-side felt financially disciplined. By the time I added the cage, safety equipment, wheels, tires, suspension, cooling, controls and repairs, I had spent more than it would have cost to buy a fully built short-course SxS from someone else.

That does not mean the project was a mistake. I learned from every stage of it. But the build helped define a rule I now take more seriously: compare the cost of the finished vehicle, not the price of the starting vehicle.

The same rule applied when I looked for Blue Ball's replacement—but the right comparison was different.

A fully built ARA-spec stage-rally car would have offered more capability, safety equipment and competition preparation than I needed. I was not trying to enter stage rally. I wanted a cheap car I could slide in the dirt with a modest set of responsible safety, reliability and performance upgrades.

Compared with a prepared SxS or a full stage-rally build, a rough-running car could be remarkably economical.

The Search Was for a Cheap Car, Not a Mazdaspeed3

I did not begin by deciding that a Mazdaspeed3 was the perfect rally platform.

I was interested in almost anything inexpensive that ran and drove. It did not need to be pretty. It did not even need to be street legal. The goal was to find a disposable-feeling car that could become an affordable off-road classroom—something I could slide, work on, break within reason and put back together.

That search happened to land on a 2008 Mazdaspeed3 for $1,500.

It was rough, front-wheel drive and already honest about what it was. That made it a better fit for the experiment than something rare, polished or expensive enough to make every dirt impact emotionally painful.

Low Ball was never supposed to become a miniature professional rally car. It was supposed to be the kind of “shitbox” that gives you permission to learn.

Why Low Ball Works

Low Ball still needed real work. Cheap does not mean free, and dirt is hard on aging street-car parts. The car has received safety equipment, more suitable suspension, motor mounts, underbody protection, wheels, tires, maintenance and repairs.

It has also lost an axle, broken motor mounts, de-beaded a tire, damaged an oil-filter housing and smashed a bash bar after a nose-first landing.

The difference is scale and intent.

Blue Ball became a costly short-course machine that was easy to roll and expensive to repair. Low Ball is a deliberately imperfect experiment. Its lower purchase price and simpler starting point let me spend where safety and reliability matter while accepting that the car will never be an ARA-spec build.

Front-wheel drive adds another useful lesson. Low Ball asks me to rotate the car before demanding power, respect how much work the front tires are already doing and manage weight transfer instead of relying on horsepower or all-wheel drive to solve the exit.

The speeds can be lower, but the feedback is immediate. That is exactly what I wanted.

Race It. Break It. Fix It. Repeat.

Low Ball's rhythm has become simple: race it, break it, fix it, repeat.

That phrase is funny because it is true. The build log is not separate from the experience. It is the experience.

A father-and-son night run ended with an axle and motor mounts failing. A jump that looked great on video ended with weeks of repairs. A coolant hose came off, went back on with a clamp, and let the car return to the course before announcing itself again with another drip.

None of that makes Low Ball a failure. Each problem creates a chance to understand the car, improve the weak point and come back with a better decision.

The goal is not to build the perfect rally car or become a professional rally driver. The goal is to keep learning, laugh with friends, spend time wrenching with people I care about and make dirt driving feel accessible to someone who assumes motorsports requires a perfect vehicle and a professional-sized budget.

What the Transition Really Taught Me

Blue Ball and Low Ball are not examples of one platform being universally better than another.

They are examples of choosing the vehicle that matches the purpose.

If the goal is serious short-course competition, buying a properly built SxS may make far more sense than starting with a discounted stock machine. If the goal is stage rally, buy or build to the rules and safety standards of that discipline.

My goal was smaller and more personal: practice car control in the dirt, have fun with friends and family, learn to wrench and create an approachable way to introduce other people to loose-surface driving.

For that job, Low Ball makes more sense.

Blue Ball taught me what I loved. Low Ball removed enough cost and consequence to let me keep doing it.
