Why I Bought a Proven Race Car Instead of Building Another One

Building The First Ball taught me how parts, failures and setup interact. Buying the S Collective-built Golf Ball taught me when a proven race car is worth more.

The cheapest way to build a track car is usually to buy someone else’s finished one.

That sentence is also how people end up buying someone else’s unfinished problems.

I learned both sides through The First Ball and Golf Ball. I developed The First Ball, a 2020 Mazda MX-5, one modification at a time. Then I bought Golf Ball, a 2011 Porsche Cayman already built and proven in time trials by S Collective.

The two cars taught me that “build or buy?” is the wrong first question. The better question is what you want to learn—and whether you trust the car, the builder and its history enough to pay for the time someone else already invested.

Building The First Ball was the education

Because The First Ball evolved slowly, I could feel what each change actually did. Coilovers altered the way it moved. Sway bars changed its balance. Seats helped me focus on driving instead of bracing myself through corners. Brakes, cooling and safety equipment became more important as street driving turned into repeated track use.

That process taught me that a modification is rarely only a modification. More grip can expose cooling, braking or hub weaknesses. A track alignment can improve an event and annoy you on the drive home. A suspension change may solve one behavior while revealing another.

I also learned how easily a reasonable sequence of purchases becomes an unreasonable total. Every individual order made sense. The accumulated build made a different argument.

None of that money was wasted. I was paying for an education in wrenching, setup, failure and preparation. Building was right because learning the process was part of the goal.

The hidden cost is not only parts

Build budgets usually begin with parts and labor. They should also include alignment, fluids, shipping, failed experiments, duplicated solutions, downtime, and the track days used to discover that the latest idea did not solve the problem.

There is an opportunity cost too. Every weekend spent waiting for a part or diagnosing a setup is a weekend the driver may not be learning behind the wheel.

That tradeoff is not automatically bad. If you enjoy the garage as much as the track, the build hours are part of the hobby. Some of my best memories came from learning to wrench with friends and my son.

Eventually, though, I wanted the next car to begin further along. I wanted a platform that could expose the driver’s weaknesses without requiring me to first develop the entire car around them.

What “proven” should actually mean

A modified car is not proven because it has an impressive parts list.

A proven car has a history you can understand. You know who selected the parts, who installed them, what each choice was meant to solve, how the car was maintained, what has failed and whether the setup has produced repeatable results.

That distinction mattered with Golf Ball. It had been Silvio’s personal race car—owned and driven by him—and built and developed for time trials by Silvio, Kelsey and the broader S Collective team. I knew the people, the shop, and the purpose behind the car.

I was not buying an anonymous modified Porsche from a listing. I was buying a known car from a trusted North Texas builder, with access to the people who understood why it was assembled the way it was.

Trust was part of the purchase price.

What I was really buying

The obvious value was the hardware: suspension, differential, cage, seats, data, brakes, cooling and the long list of supporting parts.

The greater value was compression. I was buying years of decisions, installation, setup changes and testing in one package. I was buying a shorter route to useful seat time.

That does not mean the car required no work. Proven race cars still need maintenance. Parts wear. Hardware loosens. Golf Ball later taught me that directly when axle hardware separated during a weekend at Circuit of the Americas.

Buying a finished car changes the work. It does not eliminate it.

It also does not make the driver finished. Golf Ball was faster, mid-engined and less forgiving of some habits I had developed in the Miata. Its established setup made my weaknesses easier to see because I could not blame every problem on the next modification the car supposedly needed.

The most important Golf Ball upgrade remains the driver, and that component is still under development.

When building makes sense

Build when the process is part of what you want. It can be right when you want to understand every system, enjoy testing changes, have access to knowledgeable people and accept that the car will evolve over time.

Building also makes sense when your rules, budget or intended use are unusual enough that the right completed car is unlikely to exist.

Just price the entire project: safety equipment, consumables, setup work, maintenance and inevitable rework—not only the exciting parts in the shopping cart.

When buying makes sense

Buy when seat time is the priority, and you can verify the car’s history.

The best opportunity is not simply a discounted completed car. It is a car with a known owner, documented maintenance, a trustworthy builder, a clear ruleset and results that support the claim that the package works.

The seller should be able to explain the car without hiding behind the build sheet. A pre-purchase inspection should confirm its condition. Spares, setup notes, alignment records, data and service history can be worth more than another expensive component.

If the car cannot be explained, it is not proven. It is merely modified.

A practical checklist

Who owned and drove it? Who built and maintained it? What class was it designed for? Which parts are current, worn or expired? What has failed? What setup data exists? What would the builder change today? Can someone independent inspect it? Which spares and records come with it?

The answers matter more than the number of aftermarket logos.

The exception: build only as much car as you need

Blue Ball and Low Ball made the build-versus-buy lesson more complicated—and more useful.

Blue Ball began as a deeply discounted stock side-by-side. Once I added the cage, seats, harnesses, suspension work, wheels, tires, steering, cooling, brakes, data and repairs needed to turn it into the short-course vehicle I wanted, the cheap starting point stopped mattering. Building Blue Ball still cost more than buying an already completed short-course SxS would have cost.

Low Ball was different because the goal was intentionally smaller. I did not need a fully built ARA-spec stage rally car. That level of cage, preparation, equipment and competition capability would have cost far more and delivered much more car than I needed for sliding around the dirt at ECR and working on car control.

What I needed was a running shitbox that could survive the dirt with a modest set of responsible safety, reliability and performance upgrades. The 2008 Mazdaspeed3 that became Low Ball provided exactly that. Compared with building Blue Ball—or buying a fully prepared stage-rally car—it was genuinely economical.

The lesson is not simply that buying built is cheaper. It is that the cheapest sensible path starts with defining the actual job. Building toward a competition ruleset you do not plan to use is just another version of Racer Math.

The lesson from both cars

If I had skipped The First Ball, I would not have understood why Golf Ball was valuable. The Miata taught me how modifications interact, how failures reshape preparation and why community knowledge matters.

If I had continued modifying The First Ball forever, I might have missed the chance to learn from a car that was already capable.

The answer was not building instead of buying. It was building first, learning what I valued and then buying with better judgment.

I still do this for fun. I am not trying to become a professional driver. The goal is to keep learning, wrench with friends, compete when it adds structure and help other people find a less intimidating way into the sport.

The First Ball taught me to ask which part should come next.

Golf Ball taught me to ask whether another part was really the answer.

Racer Math has not yet confirmed whether that question saves money.
